Wedding videographycame into being during the days of 16MM and 8 MM film. The predecessors to today’s digital video cameras, they would capture the weddings of friends and family on film. The 8MM cameras, which were the most popular and commonplace, we’re not particularly efficient. It was relatively expensive to process the film, especially considering that the technology was not available at that time to record sound as well.
Videography in general started to come into its own with the advent of the hand held consumer marketed camcorders. Up until the the 1980s video documentation of wedding celebrations was left mainly to the rich or celebrity. Of course, the first camcorders on the market available to the average consumer were not of the highest quality. This is because the technology was so new at the time. There were other drawbacks to the early camcorders. Size and weight were two of these drawbacks, which are nonexistent today. Those who attempted to produce wedding videos with these early camcorders found that with all the challenges between the technology and the event, most couples who retained their services were almost always dissatisfied with the end product.
Until the mid 1990s wedding videography was marred by a negative reputation. Around this time, digital video cameras began to replace the 1980s analog camcorders. This upgrade and technology allowed production to overcome many of the hurdles which had held it back for so long. Of course, by this time the analog camcorders had come a long way, and we’re much better. But even their improvements were no match for the new digital video cameras. During the 1990s advanced video editing tools became more readily available and less expensive. One of the biggest post production revolutions came in the form of of the burnable DVD. Once the digital media was available all three phases of video could live in the digital realm.
As a technology became more and more viable there was an uptrend in the use of the video technology to document events. It could be said that once video became a digital format videography as a whole, especially wedding videography, exploded. Today, you can find quality video documentation for a fraction of the price it was only a few years ago. In fact, if you so desired you could even have your wedding done in high definition.
Because of the ever evolving technologies your options in documentation are vast. From retro to cutting edge, the choice, today, is yours.
